COVID-19 Service Information

The COVID-19 global crisis is affecting us all. At Kefir Grains we pride ourselves on providing certainty for our customers, colleagues and the wider community. With the current uncertainty in Ireland, we wanted to take a moment to explain our situation and give some helpful advice for looking after your starter cultures during this time.


As we currently stand (30/03/20) we are fully operational.

Unless instructed otherwise by the Government, we will continue to operate as per usual and will strive to continue the quality service we normally offer. If we do have to make any further changes, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.


Like the majority of food businesses, we are experiencing high levels of panic buying. While we wholeheartedly appreciate the purchases, it has placed a great strain on our small team of packers who are now working day and night to get orders processed and shipped. We are doing everything we possibly can with this situation BUT please be patient and expect some delays!

The good news is Anpost, DPD and Nightline have stated they will remain open for now. However we are currently awaiting further updates.

We are fully stocked at the moment on everything that we do not manufacture in house. This includes many of the ingredients required for our cultures such as tea, milk, flour and sugar. We do not foresee any issues going forward with stock levels UNLESS something drastic occurs with our suppliers.

Due to unprecedented demand we are now out of stock on all Kombucha Scobys and Kombucha Kits. We are working hard to get these back in stock as quickly as possible.

We will update the service status as things continue to evolve and change.


All of our staff are trained in food safety management and we are adopting even more stringent hygiene and cleaning routines to further aid in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Current evidence shows that the virus does not last for long on surfaces and any virus found on the packaging or food would be dead on arrival after shipping. COVID-19 requires a human host for survival. Food and food packaging is not high risk.


Should the situation arise that you are unable to obtain the ingredients to keep your ferments active, please follow these procedures:

Milk Kefir, Water Kefir, and Ginger Kefir:
Strain the grains and put them into an airtight container and freeze them. Grains can also be left to dry or be dehydrated. Both methods will require some patience during the reactivation stage.

Sourdough is very hardy and will survive many months in the fridge unfed. However, we recommend that you freeze your starter. It will revive very fast once defrosted.

These need to be stored in an airtight container with some starter tea. Keep them at room temperature. They are remarkably resilient and will last for years.

Unfortunately, yogurts do not always do well with being frozen or dried out. We would recommend freezing them over dehydration for the best success.
